While I agree in principle, keep in mind that every person you have sex with
raises the likelyhood that you have sex with an infected person, and every
time you have sex you raise the likelyhood that you'll catch whatever they
have.
No form of protection is 100% foolproof (including abstinece, no matter what
they may say). Hell, if you live in a hermetically sealed bubble there's
still a really, really, really, vanishingly small chance you could catch (in
this example) AIDS.
To depersonalize it, it's just statistics -- the more sex you have and the
more partners you have the more likely you are to be infected, all else
being equal.
But yeah, being smart about it /dramatically/ reduces the chances.
