Yeah - this will probably get added to the list of false claims believed as true and thus become the basis for public policy. For example the "Razor-blade in the apple on Halloween" story (there never was a razor blade found in an apple). Also the "well known fact" that there are devil-worshiping, human sacrificing cults all over (no evidence for a single one has been found).
