E, I agree that targeting SUVs as the bad guys is an oversimplification.
However there is a major difference here in what the car makers are required
to do. Crash protection? Cars have stricter requirements. Emisions? Cars
have stricter requirements.

But IMHO, the real difference is between people who want to make a
difference versus people who for whatever reason dont. Some may say they
want to make a difference but when it comes down to it, their actions speak
for themselves.

So, you say you want to save the environment but you drive a honking vehicle
that guzzles gas because you think its cool, then you've shown that you
think being cool is more important than considerations for the environment.
If its an SUV, then it very likely polutes more than a car that gets the
same mileage and again you've shown what you really think. You say you care
about your fellow man but if you get in an accident with that monster
vehicle youre driving, youre more likely to kill him.

I agree that if youre a farmer and driving a honking truck, then youre
probably not trying to be cool(youre most likely broke too) and that if I
see you driving on the highway in an suv by yourself, that I dont have
enough info to judge. However, I'll shamefully state as an american that by
the averages (amount of people driving long distances repeitively alone in
oversize vehicles) that we dont give enough of a hoot about the environment.
But hey, were all about free speech and I guess were excersizing it.

Subject: SUV's and Dead Horses

Not to beat to beat the dead horse here ... But I was looking up some
fairly popular cars versus a couple of SUV's ... And I think some of the
differences in gas mileage is negligible and even a couple of SUV's came
out ahead of popular cars ...

So I think it's all pretty relative and comes down again to the fact
people really shouldn't generalize, as some SUV owners try to own the
best one for the environment while still getting the vehicle they want
and enjoy, while some car owners don't realize that an SUV does better
on the road then their car.

Now there's no reasoning for the Lincon Navigator people other than they
have the money to waste I suppose ... But others should be given a bit
more slack since their SUV only does 1 mpg less than the popular
minivans. That's hardly something to crucify over ... But then again,
what do I know.

Interesting stuff. Of course there's lots of great family cars in this
list that do great on mileage.
