Erika, you've pointed up one of the huge issues with cars these days.
Despite all the rhetoric regarding fuel economy and rising fuel prices, it's
all going to hell in a handbasket.

We have a 1990 Subaru Legacy Wagon. It gets us approximately 35/30 MPG in
real use. A 2003 model gets 21/27 MPG by the specs and real-world is often
less.

Look at the Honda Accord. It used to be considered a compact car. Now it's a
mid-size family sedan. The size went up and the economy went in the toilet.

So yes, the badgering of SUV owners is a bit displaced. People should be
badgering the industry as a whole if they're actually concerned. I will say
though, that while the MPG _looks_ the same, the auto industry has
consistently fought to keep SUVs from having the same stricter emission
requirements as cars.
