Sounds like he's already started a recovery process and stopped in the
middle of it, the recovery cd may have installed well be a non-dos boot
loader. Continuing on with the recovery might be his only option.
However, he may have lost all his files already it just depends on
whether the recovery disk bothered to keep the old fat table intact. 

Partition magic is worth a try though.

not that I've noticed, someone gave this to me to recover it for him. I
know
there is data in the partition because the partition even though it says
non-dos in fdisk is bootable. When I boot to it it says "Gateway GoBack
press a key to continue" . At that point I just shut it down. I don't
know
what the guy did. I believe he booted his pc with the recovery cd in the
drive and it booted up and started running.
