Sounds like he's already started a recovery process and stopped in the middle of it, the recovery cd may have installed well be a non-dos boot loader. Continuing on with the recovery might be his only option. However, he may have lost all his files already it just depends on whether the recovery disk bothered to keep the old fat table intact.
