I know i never said a volunteer army their whole lifespan just at the end :)

I guess that almost 1000 years isn't lasting

It also depends on what time you're talking about, when Rome was a
republic, or early imperial Rome under Augustus, or the late Roman Empire
under Constantine I etc. The composition of the legions varied widely. In
the 4th though 7th centuries, the Roman army consisted of federati - allied
tribes or mercenaries. At one point the army of Attila the Hun had more
Roman soldiers than the Roman legions opposing him.
