For me, bombs HERE is the worst thing that can happen. Selfish, but there it is. I truly believe the world will be a better place when Saddam is not in it. Period. I wish the war wasn't necessary (which I think it is in the final analysis). I wish the UN and disarmament and sanctions and containment and appeasement had worked. It didn't. I truly believe that had we not stopped him, at some point Americans would die because of actions taken by Saddam and the Iraqi regime. They say that hindsight is perfect. Knowing what we know now, we should have gone after Bin Laden more aggressively when we had a chance. We didn't and now regret it. I think there is a distant possibility that America will end up like a wounded buffalo surrounded by wolves, being harried from every point of the compass by those who hate us. But I don't think it will happen because we act in the world. I think it will happen if we don't act, and let dangers to our country grow unchecked. I disagreed with Republican isolationism in the 80s and 90s. I think we need to get more engaged on the world stage. We should declare ourselves and what we stand for. And then stick by it. If anyone (Saudi Arabia) doesn't like it, too bad. Some things are black and white, good and bad. And we as America have too often tried to color things grey when they were distinctly black, because it was easier. There are other things that are grey, where different people legitimately see them differently. But some of these things are to us as Americans, our way of life, and our society, black and white. And these things too we must champion. Not necessarily impose our beliefs on others, but declare them in a proud voice. And also let it be known that there may be consequences for those differences. There is an local store owned by an immigrant family from India. Nice store, decent prices, good food. But they won't sell to Pakistanis. And they yell at black customers and follow them through the store. So I don't shop there. They are allowed their prejudices, but they are paying for them in our little community. That's my eighteen cents.
