Ireland is a complex little island, and the only thing most reasonable
people want over there is a little peace and quiet.

That being said, Northern Ireland is a British territory, and until 1921 all
of Ireland was a British territory.

Considering all the Irish have been through, including the Penal laws which
took away the right of Catholics to attend mass and buying or inheriting
land, life is a lot better now that it had been since 1601. Most reasonable
people are willing to (at least) live with this state of affairs.

And personally I hope it stays that way for a long time, large numbers of
people from my family died in various revolutions there over the years.

Last summer I went to a family reunion and met up with the relatives who
keep the family history. Reading through some of it was quite depressing.

see, I think that is the part you aren't seeing. Four generations later, my
problem with your proposal is that the British still have soldiers in
Ireland. It isn't that they used to, it's that they still do :)

But this does not mean I hate the British -- I just think the shouldn't be
in Ireland :) This position is quite possibly not typical however :)
