We are probably boring every other person on this list who doesn't know what
we are talking about. :-)

You where pretty close then, Clovis is about 20 miles north of Portales.
You may not have realized it, but Interstate 40 runs through a very broad
valley. If you turn south at Tucumcari onto US 70, you will quickly climb
up few hundred feet to a plateau. Clovis and Portales are on this plateau,
it is pretty flat, just enough hills to be nice. Keep going south you will
get to Roswell.

I know what you mean about the stars. Took an Astronomy class and the labs
where too much fun.

I think the closest I have been to there is Clovis, and that was on the
drive in from Texas. Are there mountains or is it plains like oh Fort
Sumner and Vaughn? I remember once driving from Las Vegas (NM) to Las
Cruces. It was about the third time I had done it that week because I was
finalizing a move, so I was bored with the interstate and took the back
road through Vaughn and Alamagordo. I kept stopping to look at the stars.
Absolutely amazing. I saw nobody and was utterly happy :)
