Oh, add the fact that we've got 2 greyhounds, whenever we travel they
need space to lay down in

Since whenever we travel (for stays) we take the dogs with us, plus the
luggage, we can't do without a largish vehicle

As long as you don't drive at stupid speeds (I use Cruise Control a lot,
and always stay under the speed limit), then the gas usage is acceptable

In January we went on a weekend away with a couple of friends and our
dog (one at the time) to Scotland - with all of the luggage and the room
for the animal, if we didn't have the Explorer, then we would have
needed 2 vehicles, which would have used MUCH more gas

We try not to do stupid small trips, if the shops are close enough to
walk to, then we don't drive

Owning a big vehicle is about intelligent usage - if you use it for
short "town" trips, then you're using gas up, if you only use it for
long trips, then they're fine

We can't wait until we can get a hybrid SUV - Ford and Dodge have some
great ones coming out, which will REALLY help with the gas usage, and
have the same storage as a regular SUV (or very close)

Roll on the Hybrids <g>
