I thought the exact same thing.  Parts of it were interesting, but it
got boring rather quickly.  Of course, I haven't read LOTR since I was
13, and when I recently tried that again, it got long and tired real
fast.

IT was written more like a big long poem than a story...and it just

I picked up on some summer reading this month, bought a copy of the
Simarillion and loved it. The book is a history of Middle Earth from the
perspective of the Elves, going from the creation stories to the end of
LOTR. Then I watched FOTR, and that movie was packed with references to
events from the Simarillion. Made the movie much more interesting. 

Anyways, I wanted to put this out there for anyone who hasn't read the
book, and also ask if anyone has dabbled in any of the other Tolkien
books.
