What you have to consider is maybe a quantity type of thing - if you
consider that a slug reacts to salt - there's a certain amount of salt
in the ground (a tiny amount, but similar to the water vapour), but they
don't turn white and puffy - but if you pour salt on a slug, it DOES go
white and puffy...

Maybe they never developed door knobs - maybe their door technology was
all based on sliding stuff, not swinging stuff, so they knew how to open
a sliding window, but not a swinging window

If you came across an iris which required you to apply pressure to a
point on it to open (which might be an alien's "natural" type of door),
you would look confused at it, but the aliens would say "how the hell
can they not know how to open that - it's easy"
