Tim asked "Shouldn't they be able to say no gay ministers?" My point is
that it was a case where the church in question _is_ making the choice
and it's to have a gay bishop. I was just pointing out that the
Episcopalian Church is not part of the Catholic Church and thus isn't
bound by Catholic dogma.

If you want to get into whether they are both Christian and thus must
have the same rules about homosexuality, IIRC, while the old testament
wasn't terribly kind towards homosexuals, the new testament is about
forgiveness. And the majority of the Catholic doctrine against
homosexuality is actually from the separate writings of St. Paul which
are separate from the bible but canon to the catholics.

If you want to take a step back and look at it from a sociological
viewpoint, some of the teachings in the old testament/Torah appear to be
reactionary to create a separation between the Jews and, say, the
Egyptians or Romans. The lessons teach an opposition to things the Jews
didn't care for in the people they were subjugated to. That's not to
diminish the religion, just that every religion is in part a product of
it's history.
