Reading through Marwan Saidi's message reminded me (unintentionally I'm
sure) of one of my favorite misapplied science clichs: "Nature abhors a
vacuum"

Considering that here are some guidelines I've come up with to define a
misapplied science cliche:

1) The clich is applied as a debate ender or causal reason to areas
other than intended such as economics, politics, or sociology. An
example might be claiming "Survival of the fittest" to justify corporate
rape.

2) The clich is applied continuously even tho' the original scientific
premise is itself incorrect. An example would be "Nature abhors a
vacuum" as nearly 100% of the universe is vacuous. Nature, it seems,
could give a toss about a vacuum - gravity on the other hand seems to
care quite a bit.

3) The clich is just plain used incorrectly to further selfish needs.
An environmentally unfriendly corporation (or individual) may reply to
criticism with "the ecology is a self-correcting system" for example.

Any others?
