I had an 80-something Stanza and it started to behave similarly, finally
diagnosed as "vapor lock".  See if any of these match more of the specifics

It was a pretty cheap fix, once the mechanic took his sweet time to diagnose
an (at the time) fairly common problem.  It's pretty much a non-issue with
newer cars.
