If the possesion of nuclear weapons results in a MAD situation, then most assuredly they are a very potent deterrent. This effectively places any invader into a no win situation. Even if they managed to somehow capture important areas in the USA, the US gov't could still destroy the home country, any of their allies, and the conquered areas about 50 times over.
