In comparison to Edmonton, which is a bit larger than Winnipeg. Edmonton was about $1000 more per year. Moreover Winnipeg is larger than several of the other provincial capitals where auto insurance is private, yet it has significantly lower auto insurance costs. The comparisons also extended to smaller cities. The CAC compared smaller cities in both groups, and found similar results, public auto insurance rates were significantly lower than in those cities were auto insurance was private. Lethbridge Alberta vs Cranbrook BC was one of the comparisons for instance. Remember the study used insurance quotes for the exact same drivers in these 40 cities. In each and every case private insurance was more expensive than the publicly owned comparisons.
