I didn't mean that after a week or two, they were better.  I mean that
after a few years, whatever shift in brain chemistry or whatever led to
their depression seemed either to have undone itself or they learned to
live with it (much as people learn to walk with a limp or whatever).

Being sad is being sad.  Being depressed goes far beyond being sad.
Depression, in my opinion, can best be defined as the inablility to
experience joy.  And that's a tragedy.
