I've gotta imagine that you're kidding...but in case you're not...
I'm a NY Giants fan. This season, I definitely know what it means to be sad
for a week. Each Sunday gives me new hope...but turns out to be the same
old same old, and I'm sad. I read articles during the week about how the
team "can't believe what's happening to them" and I'm sad. I look at the
Cowboys with our old coach, who were supposed to be having a "rebuilding
year" sitting at the top of the NFC East at 5-1, and I'm sad.
In spite of being sad about this, I can go out with my friends and have a
good time. I can look at my daughter and smile. I can get my work done
during the day. I never think about whether it would be 'better' to slit my
wrists in the tub, or go to sleep in the car in the garage with the engine
running. I won't end up in a small room in an institution staring at the
mirror in the bathroom thinking, "damn...it's plastic...if it comes down to
it, the only way I can think to end it in here would be to slam my head
against the tile in the shower as hard as I can" (and yes, that was an
actual thought process I went through).
Sorry if that -seems- to be a bit over the top. But I trust that
illustrates the difference?

Well, yes and no. You will always know that you have a predisposition
towards depression. However, several people I know have eventually
"come out of it". That is, they lead "normal" lives with no more
depressive symptoms than the average person and no drugs.
Some people live their whole lives with it. Some don't. Don't ask me
what the difference is, though.
