the messages that compose it? Perhaps with the score weighted so that if,
say, more than 5 people rate one or more messages in the thread 'must-read'
then this matters somewhat more than subsequest off-topic posts? For
example, a thread is rated +1 and clicking it reveals, for example, a
question, two thoughtful answers and one recommedation to install linux,
the later sparking an off-topic OS debate and an admonition to move the
off-topic discussion to another forum. The first messages might have an
average score of 1.5 or 1.1 or whatever and the latter negative ratings.
Come to think of it, because of the effect of negative numbers you might
want to avoid them altogether. It would only take one -1 to make a post
every one else was rating as important offtopic, and then another would
cancel it out... might want to use .5 or .25 instead.
Another thought --- I personally would like to see a distinction made
between fights (people calling each other asshole, few new ideas) and
debates (people disagreeing but ideas are being presented).
Lastly, what is off-topic for cf-community? Anothing not CF? anything not
offtopic?
