I'm not sure of the behind the scenes reasons. I'm betting though that
is has to do a bit with the whole SCO/lisence mess going on. Plus, Since
they are just going to offer a pay Enterprise version, they may be
anticipating companies switching over to Linux.

It will remain open source to an extent but I would see a lot of support
for this go away soon since your average hacker won't be able to afford
to buy it.

I haven't heard about that. I wonder if they will drop in popularity
