Many people own little pieces. Everybody still owns every byte he has contributed. But since only contributions that are licensed under the GPL are ever accepted, the kernel as a whole can be used under the terms of the GPL.

That is probably a good comparison. But with the addition that all the dips are freely available for anybody who goes out to get it. It just requires you to do a little work to get it on top, and a bit more to get a smooth coating, but the components are available for free.
