I've liked my Dell a lot, but it was issued to me (I had no choice).
I do really like a lot of the prices I see at TigerDirect.com. They
actually just sent me a Laptop deal that, specs-wise, seems to fit your
needs:

pNo=669156&sku=E400-M5310%20P&SRCCODE=WEM577C>
&sku=E400-M5310%20P&SRCCODE=WEM577C
It's an eMachines - a company I can normally do happily without, but
it's got some killer specs for $999. There's a promotional code of
"WEM577PH" although it doesn't seem to affect the price.
My one complaint about both Dell's I've had so far is the bay/drive
lock: there's a slide switch on the bottom that holds in the
CD-ROM/Floppy/Whatever - it's VERY easy for this to be pulled while the
'puter's in a bag. So many times I've pulled out my laptop only to have
the CD-ROM drive slide out and crash to the floor. On the plus side the
drive has never failed. so give them that one. ;^)

Subject: What should I get?
Ok folks, time for me to get a laptop. I'd like something under $1000
and possibly one that can handle a wired and wireless net connection.
What are you folks happy with? Dell? Sony? Gateway?
