alternate machine, and expand (unzip) it on to a bootable floppy. The affected
machine should be set up to boot from floppy first, and the rest is pretty well
automatic.
Then go back into the BIOS and configure the settings the way you want them, or
accept the defaults. click save and apply and then boot normally. IF it will
not boot normally at this point, then the reinstall of the OS should work OK.

| How would I re-install the BIOS? Sorry if it is a dumb question,

| If you see the message that CMOS has changed, that should be a clue
| that you
| need to either update or preferably reinstall the BIOS.
|
| All other operations, OS install, etc, depend on a correct BIOS set
| up.

| Subject: Weird PC Problem
|
|
| | I have a computer system 800mhz with 256meg ram, I had an error pop
| up
| | about the CMOS battery.
| |
| | So I replaced it and now when I went to log on, it reported that the
| | CMOS setup had changed.
| | This is to be expected, so I said OK.
| |
| | Now it would not boot in, so after this weekend trying to get it to
| | work, I decided to scrap to OS
| | and reformat, and re-install.
| |
| | So I loaded up the boot disk for Windows XP Home. Began he
| installation
| | of Windows XP.
| |
| | Now my problem is that it will get to about 25 minutes remaining and
| | lock up HARD. Meaning the
| | only way to reboot the machine is to hold the power button down for
| a
| | few seconds.
| | CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing... The machine was working fine. I had the
| | updated McAfee virus
| | software and DAT files. So I ruled that out. For some reason it will
| | not finish the install.
| |
| | Now I used the same Windows XP CD Rom and tested it on another
| machine
| | and it loaded fine.
| |
| | Any sugegstions, why after a certain point it would cause the system
| to
| | lock up and no longer continue
| | the installation process? I am hoping someone has ran into this
| problem
| | before.
| |
| | TIA!!
| |
