Right, so what's wrong with a lease contract, or a mortgage contract with two persons' names on it, or even having children (birth certificate 'contract')? Is that contract not binding enough for the govt. or the employer to recognize? It's more difficult to get out of a lease contract than a marriage contract these days, so how would this not be valid?

Marriage is a religious and legal fiction. The only reason it's recognized by the govt. is because they passed laws that were influenced by a religion, like many other laws on the books. But now it has turned into something way different - as long as you give them the $30 or however much a marriage contract is, they will recognize your marriage and give you the benefits. And if you want a divorce, you give the lawyer $500 (or go to illinoislawhelp.org and fill out a few forms for free) and that's that. With how easy a govt. recognized divorce is, you would think that the religious would no longer want their institution of marriage even associated with what the govt. is calling it.

I wish one of the libertarians would share their opinion on whether the govt. should recognize marriage at all.

Adam.
