Ra in the movie was a Goa'uld. They are a parasitic race that takes other
beings as hosts. This was described in the movie, but it wasn't spelled out
as the "Goa'uld".

Ra was just one "system lord" of the Goa'uld. In the first TV episode, the
wargames norad base with the Stargate was attacked by another Goa'uld called
Apophis (another Egyptian god). They basically take on the persona of the
different gods, not all of them Egyptian.

The US had decommissioned the Stargate, but after the attack they decided to
take a more proactive role in using it to explore other worlds to find
technology and allies to help fight against the Goa'uld. While there's the
occasional touchy-feely solution to problems, the operation is a military
one and there's no "prime directive". In place of the prime directive, they
have internal political squabbles about whether they should commit genocide
or not. They generally don't but they still go in carrying guns everywhere
and shoot their way out if they run into trouble.

The warriors that fight for the Goa'uld are called Jaffa. They consider the
Goa'uld to be gods and carry the parasite to maturity and as a side benefit,
they are given long life and strong recuperative power. One of the recurring
story lines is the struggle of some of the Jaffa to be free of slavery after
they realize that their gods are just alien parasites.
