Yes and no. The new version was never intended to have a direct
connection to the old. Some sort of Hollywood induced Parallel
Dimension or something. But it would have left many viewers (including
me) dissapointed had they never referenced the old series at all.
And if someone like me, born after the first show started, would be
dissapointed, all the old-timers (sorry, couldn't resist) would be up in
arms.
So, if you try to literally connect the two shows, the whole thing
breaks down. But if you just look at the Toasters and say, "Yep.
That's cool," then it all works out.
