I like this one :) I can't see what the big deal was about the graphics
engine , however. I don't think the rooms, architecture, characters or
lighting look so fantastic or add so much to the game at all. Halo
looked great, and I think this may look slightly better. I have not seen
wide outdoor areas, however, and I don't think they have those. We'll
see as I go to new locations. Right now the game looks great...about as
great as Halo and Brute Force. There's some superb lighting effects with
real time shadows (you can bouce a hanging light and watch the shadows
move crazily across the walls). Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell
seemed to have a better overall effect graphics wise in my opinion
however. And they had neat lighting as well.
The Physics engine? Now that's cool. Can pick things up and throw them
around etc. etc. to great effect. There is also rag doll animation when
people die, but like all rag doll animation there are no skeletal limits
on the models. Which results in some really silly body contortions. It
is as though when the characters die, their models suddenly become
dummies filled with foam. Imagine throwing one of those around and the
myrida positions the limbs and head can end up ;-) . I'd really like to
see someone do these 'rag doll' animations with some limits. e.g. a
persons arm can't normally extend behind them, and their elbows don't
bend backward..neither do their knees bend forward from getting shot in
the head ^_^.
Everything in the game is very..very dark. Perhaps this is to showoff
the new lighting effect in the game engine, but I just think they went
way overboard. People in the world of Deus Ex apparently don't believe
in proper lighting.
What I love about the game though, is the open-endedness of it. Y ou can
truly approach your goals from several angles, and there are truly
several different ways to complete your objectives.
For instance:
The black market trader wants a lawyer killed....so I go to the lawyer
and tell him that.
He pays me 450 Credits for the info...but I don't leave I kill him and
his bodyguard.
Then go back to the Trader to get my other reward.
Then I buy equipment from the trader with the 450 Creds...then go to the
police to inform about the Trader and get more money.
Yes, so far playing the game without a conscience has granted the best
rewards. There doesn't seem to be a 'Good-Evil' meter as in KOTOR or
even True Crime that keeps long term track of your actions, so the only
thing preventing you from being psychotically self-centered is where
that would prevent you from completeing a goal. But once the goal has
been completed apparently there's nothing wrong with offing someone or
informing on them.
Perhaps not keeping track of your actions was an oversight in the game
design, but it doesn't diminish from the fun of figuring out how to
maximise your rewards from each side quest.
Plus! You can save anywhere, anytime. :)
However you are unable to name your save games yourself. It auto-names
them based on where you are and the time you've been playing.
I have problems with the control scheme, however....aiming is a chore
and for some reason aiming and moving is very imprecise. The controls
don't feel as sharp and well defined as in Halo or Brute Force. You can
adjust the sensitivity of the thumbsticks, so maybe I need to play
around with that and see.
So! Add one to the christmas list if you own an Xbox *grin*. Deus Ex
seems to be shaping up to be a great Sci Fi RPG/FPS :)
