The kit is $199 - not that cheap, but for that you got a 40 Gig hard drive
for the PS2, the PS2 Network adapter, a PS2-styled keyboard and mouse and a
PS2-to-VGA cable. Oh - and the Linux distro. ;^) Not a bad price, really.
The site has a great overview of how it works, who it's aimed at and such.
The link that the site gives to buy the kit is bad however, here's the
correct one:
http://www.us.playstation.com/peripherals.aspx?id=SCPH-97047
One gotcha is that the hard drive that comes with the kit cannot be used for
regular PlayStation 2 HDD games - it's dedicated to Linux completely.
Personally if you have the room I would think you'd want to go the cheap PC
route - for the same price you can get a moderately peppy Pentium PC. But
running Linux on your PS2 is something that should, at least, get the geeks
in your area a little green with envy. ;^)

Hmmm, there is a PS2 version? DO you have a link/more information? I didn't
see it on the linux.org site. I was thinking perhaps I should just get the
kid a 486 and keep the two projects separate.
