: It will increase Bush's chance of getting the hispanic vote.....oh wait,
: you're asking how it's a *good* idea........hmmmm, well I'm stumped on
: that one.

Actually, this initiative will hurt Bush's standing among many legal Hispanic
immigrants.   The view is why go through all the red tape and heartbreak to
complete the legal process just to discover it was not at all necessary in the
first place.  They watch as hundreds of thousands illegally cross the border on
a daily basis.  They watch as Immigration judges release captured illegals into
the streets, which makes the apprehension and detention of illegals a sham of
the first degree.

We already know that employers of illegals are not being held to task except in
very selective circumstances.
Legal immigrants and naturalized citizens in most cases are able to vote, while
illegals are not supposed to have this privilege available to them.  This said,
it is already known that many illegals, with all their false papers, etc, do
vote.

The entire immigration process is broken as well as being very unbalanced.  For
instance, any Cuban who can set foot on US shores, is automatically granted
citizenship.  Canadians and Western Europeans must go through Red Tape hell just
to be considered for legalization.

If it were up to me (and it well may be a good thing that it isn't) All illegals
would be apprehended and processed either for legal admission or deportation.
All employers of illegals would face felony charges as well as substantial civil
penalties.  Red Tape for spousal legalization would be slashed 90% or more.  No
immigrant legal or otherwise with a criminal history would be allowed to remain
in the US.  Public schools would be require proof of legal residence prior to
admission, as would all applications for government funded services with the
exception of emergency medical care.  Skills and ability to contribute to the
overall economy should be given higher priority.

This view is shared by many of my acquaintances who are legal immigrants from
"South of the Border" and the problem is exacerbated by the over 23000 homeless
in my city alone.

I certainly do not presume to have all the answers
