It's true that language is simply what people say, but it's not a question
of "shoulds". It's a question of your objective when speaking to someone. If
you want to gain their trust or respect then you use a different language
than if you wish to wound. Language is as language does.
Personally I don't believe you can ever be too careful with language. A
careless word can destroy years of effort.
As for respect, its an article of faith for me (though not always an easy
one) that everyone deserves it, even when they don't appear to.

Assuming we all want to be nice and not hurt anyones feelings, which is not
true of course, but lets pretend, why should a minority group get to define
meanings of words? If the majority says that X implies Y but the minority
disagrees, well, isn't that too bad? Sure X may have meant something bad in
the past, but language is fluid, it changes.
