If you are already using it and don't rely on it to keep your messages (that is what the IMAP server is for), and you have managed to stay virus-free for several years, it might not be a bad solution. The switching to IMAP is more important then the client you use.

Builds don't change that often anymore but I don't really keep track anymore, after Thunderbird hit 0.3 it simply was good enough. Besides, it is just a matter of deleting a directory and extracting the new binaries in that place.
The only thing left that would be an instant update for me is the ability to specify which headers are quoted when replying to a message. For the rest I don't miss anything anymore.
