When I have had this problem, I usually create another partition with the
data I want to keep, install the OS to the partition that has no data on it,
boot into the OS and your other partition, which would be seen as a 2nd
drive, will contain all your data. Back up from there.

ok, now another question.  What kinda boot disk is best to use?  i am using
a windows 98 boot disk, cos it's the only one that doesn't take up 4 disks!
lol

Also, someone mentioned earlier that I should install a USB driver onto the
boot disk.  do i just put a USB driverin there? haha

  drive letter to assign or b) tell you on boot.

  However, I'm thinking that if you don't know how to determine what drive
  letters are live in dos, maybe this isn't the best route to take....
