a writers manuscript and rework it so that it would be more likely to be
accepted by editors. Several years ago I've read a couple of pieces where he
did that, and they are much better than his typical works.

The longest work of his is called "At the Mountains of Madness", which is
currently under production as a feature film. Most of his stuff appeared in
Weird Tales and a few other pulp magazines from the 30's and on. He
published no novels, that I am aware of. He died pretty young, pretty much
convinced that he was not a success.
He is widely regarded as the father of modern horror fiction. At least I
have heard as much from the likes of Stephen King, and Dean Koontz.
Obviously this is a subjective issue.
He is also criticized for somewhat racist views expressed in alot of his
works.
Most of his works ooze with a dark opressive atmosphere that creates the
impression that we are pretty much specks of dust in the grand scheme of
things.
