It should be noted that .ico files differ from simple jpeg or gif files.
There is an icon editor available with Visual Studio that I use for this
purpose. I am not certain, but I seem to remember Photoshop has the
ability to produce these as well. I can't remember if it is a native
feature or something that requires a plug in.
Regardless, I have needed to produce these before, and was able to do so
without having to buy anything.

Are you talking about getting the icon to show up next to the address in

url bar? If so, save a graphic as a 16x16 .ico file name favicon.ico
and
place it in the site root.
