You don't want to hear me rant about this, especially when I'm well into my second double rye and diet coke. Hey I just finished an all day meeting at the National Institutes of Health. I'm rather surprised at my restraint.
Anyhow, without going into too much technicalities, the chances of the person recovering from a peristant vegitative state (which Ms. Shaivo is in) is almost nill. She is going to stay that way from now on. There is nothing there. just a bundle of reflexes and nothing else. Keeping such alive is as far as I'm concerned a form of torture. While I have every sympathy with her parents, the reality has to be faced. Their daughter is gone, and nothing is going to bring her back.

Unfortunately Shrub II (Jeb Bush) and his fundy supporters are using her and her parents to push an agenda that is completely anathema to this country. If it goes forward all I can say is welcome to the theocracy.

I sincerely hope hope that wiser heads prevail and let the experts, like the neurologists who are involved in the case, prevail rather than the religious fanatics who really do not give a damn about the people involved.
