I have been paying a bit attention to how much I quote and I think 8 lines would be insufficient for cf-talk. If I want to quote for instance a table schema, that usually is more then 8 lines.

And on the "--- Original Message ---" thing: how about letting that be triggered by 2 occurences? That way people can still quote the message they are responding to, but only that message, and not any messages before that. (Doesn't really help against emailaddresses showing up in online archives, but helps against the rest.)
