I've had this happen many times in my life too. This thread actually
inspired me to do a quick google and I found this:

http://www.castleofspirits.com/sleep.html

Anyhow, the other night, before I went to sleep, I was reading from "The
Hot Zone," a non-fiction book about Ebola and other related hot agents.
Shortly after I fell asleep, I had this feeling that I was coming down
with some sort of horrible ailment, and then my teeth felt locked
together, as though they were very powerful magnets locked onto one
another. I couldn't move for several seconds or open my mouth. It was
pretty creepy. That, of course, was a variation on the theme, but
especially when I was a kid and my parents weren't getting along too
well, I had a lot of weird dreams, one of which was the heavy weight on
chest one. The other I had a lot back then and have never had since, was
this feeling of a very, very heavy weight being suspended in mid air by
nothing but a very, very thin thread of some sort. I can't describe the
feeling, but it was sort of like I was the heavy object looking up at
the thread -- a very anxious mood, not unlike the chest dream.

What's strange is that I don't have very vivid dreams anymore. Of
course, I only sleep about 6 hours a night, so maybe I'm not getting
into enough of a REM cycle to dream very many interesting things.
