It's a bit complicated. From the early middle ages to the 12th Century, the
area was controlled by the Islamic Caliphate. It was populated by a mixture
of Christians, Jews and Moslems. Then for about 200 years it was controlled
by European Crusaders. Then by the Ottoman Turks until the First World War
when Palestine was taken over by the British. They controlled Palestine
until 1948 when it was partitioned into Israel and Palestine. During the
Israeli war of Independence, the Suez War of 1956 and the 7 Day War in 1967,
Israel expanded to its current boundaries. Its rather disingenuous to say
that the Palestinians were recent migrants, since there has been a
historical record of Palestinians living there since the Islamic conquest of
the 7th century A.D.
