really stood out, aside from the Crusader time period, the only time when
that region was peaceful was when it was controlled by outsiders, like the
Romans, Byzantines, Persians, and Turks. When it was self ruled, either by
the Jewish, early Christian or Islamic inhabitants, it was messy violent and
prone to massacres by one side or another. For instance during parts of the
6th century, when Jerusalem was controlled by local Christian groups, they
attempted to massacre the Jewish residents. In response, the surviving
Jewish inhabitants along with others from the surrounding area allied
themselves with the Persians, and repaid the favour, killing most of the
Christians. Apparently not a house was standing afterwards.
During the First Crusade, the city of Antioch was under the control of the
Jewish residents and Egyptians mercenaries. They resisted the Christian
siege for almost 2 years. When the city fell, the Crusaders, massacred the
Egyptians and the Jews. They didn't stop there, they also did the same to
the local Christians.
There are times I think that places like the Middle East, the Balkans etc,
should be depopulated of the local inhabitants, and repopulated by people
from almost anywhere else. Then scatter the former residents of that region
throughout the world so that there is only a very small number of them in
any one country.
