I believe that it is a systemic problem. I have to give Rumsfeld credit for what he said yesterday. (More or less, that these were human beings who were in US custody and should have been treated right. And were not.)

But.

It just is not enough. The little banthebush project someone has me working on has caused me to discuss politics with a number of people over the last few days, and there seems to be fairly widespread agreement with the proposition that the re-election of George Bush would present a clear and present danger to the Constitution of the United States and possibly to the United States itself. Granted, all of these conversations took place in the University district so this may not be representative of public opinion in the US or even Albuquerque. But I see a lot of people realizing that something needs to be done.

As for the particular soldiers... I really think that they found themselves in over their heads and followed orders that perhaps should have been refused. They should be held accountable for that, but so too should the people who gave the orders, and I do mean more than just a rough day on the Hill.
