ColdFusion
Macromedia acquired Allaire, the original developer. Macromedia was known
for inadequate support. In the near future, there will be very few
ColdFusion programmers. The remaining ColdFusion programmers will charge
high fees. In the long run it will be expensive to maintain ColdFusion
applications.
> If anything the available pool of ColdFusion developers is growing. I
have recently seen it show up in a community college curriculum (NOVA) and a
state university curriculum (Chapel Hill).
There is very little support from web resources.
>This isn't even quantifiable, what is very little support? There are
dozens of sites out there, from user groups to HoF to fusebox and so on.
ColdFusion MX was evaluated and rejected by Wyndgate Technologies. Wyndgate
Technologies continued with the older 4.5 version.
>When was this? Pre-6.1 I assume? It was also evaluated by the Department
of State, The U.S. Navy and many other government departments and agencies,
and they >decided to use it. I know this from personal experience.
VisualStudio.NET
Microsoft is striving hard to make .NET a very popular development platform.
.NET came out recently and encompasses most of the components required for
most types of applications. More and more programmers are jumping onto the
bandwagon. It will become cost effective to go with .NET.
>I am not sure what the location of it is, but Ben Forta I believe at one
part compared the cost of an effective ASP server vs. an effective CF
server. It would have cost >something like $60,000 to buy all of the
components that are built into CF Ent. If you consider the amount of free
open source Java available there is know way that >ASP.Net can keep up.
There is a lot of documentation and sample code available for programmers on
the web.
Visual studio 2002 came out in 2002 and includes many of the best concepts
from several other web development tools.
>Dreamweaver is the best known and most widely used IDE in the world.
