I think this topic has it's place on this list and is very benificial,
especially to those who might be struggling to obtain employment and
could
gain from learning from the experience of others, including hearing
from
those who interview and/or employ developers and can inform those
seeking on
how to increase their chances of obtaining work..
As someone who has experience interviewing and screening CF
programmers,
("hi" to all on the list who have crossed my path) I am glad to see
this
topic raised in this forum, I concur with those statements of the
importance
of some type of proof of work.
While interviewing, I was usually very impressed with those who
presented,
at minimum, a portfolio with screen shots and snippets of code
examples.
This not only shows an attempt to prove ones ability but also
exhibits a
certain level of professionalism that usually stands out in this
somewhat
competitive and now (sadly) narrow market.
Further suggestions in one's career portfolio include, email in which
work
was praised, samples of documentation such as design and/or functional
specs, use cases, test cases, proposals, certifications, graphics,
etc.
My experience using a portfolio has been one of great response and
provides
me an ability to discuss my work while showing examples, after all, an
interview is somewhat of a sales presentation.
Good luck to everyone searching, I highly recommend entering an
interview
with some type of portfolio of work, and if currently employed,
continually
add to it as you grow in your career.

P.S. And I concur with Chris - honesty is also very important,
especially if
the interviewer happens to be a programmer too! :)
