Thanks everyone for the response.

Dave: yes - I'm logging slow pages. I've have even shut the whole site off from users,
and so had 0 load & 0 requests on the cfserver. The problem just keeps happening. I've
also looked at resource usage and this box is really not under strain at any time, day
or night. Also disk space is fine.

Jessica: I'm increasingly looking at mail as the culprit. Yesterday the problem
corrected itself after the spool directory was emptied. Last night I drop the files I
removed from the spool in the morning back into the spool and the problem immediately
returned. Seems like the issue? Maybe.

On the two other occasion messing with the spool had no effect on the problem, it just
kept happening. I am thinking that maybe there is a larger problem or instability that
was triggered yesterday by something in the spool, but on previous occasions it was
triggered by something else.

Dave (again): There was a 0 byte file in the undel directory yesterday. However
removing it did not solve the problem. Clearing the spool is what seemed to work
although I've been through all the files that were in there in a text editor and they
all look 100%.

Thanks for the help :) I'll keep a close eye on the mail.
