Many thanks for your reply.  The mail server in question is running
CommuniGatePro on a multi-processor machine with plenty of RAM.  It should be
able to handle this.

I did query it with their support people and they said that the SMTP error was
due to Coldfusion dropping the connection to the server.

What setting controls this?  I can see that it looks like I need to increase
the Spool Interval - if I set this to say 180 seconds would it help the
problem?

I am happy to look at alternative programs but CF should be capable of sending
3,000 emails without losing them en-route - and we have a more than capable
mail server.  It is very frustrating!

Any further thoughts would be very much appreciated.

sure that they all get delivered!
