Doug,
Don't replace the distro just because one app doesn't work. With this 
strategy, you might have to replace many distro's and apps. Ubuntu looks 
like a good distro.
I would suggest the following:
(1) Contact the tech team at ubuntulinux and ask them for pointers, for free 
by email. If they give you instructions and it doesn't work, ask them that 
if you "PAY" for their help, how long would it take or how much would a flat 
fee cost ? Then make up your mind whether you want to replace the distro or 
continue with ubuntu.
