@martinjuckes You and I seem to be talking past one another. I started with a conceptual definition, then proceeded to a technical definition. I did this for dimension coordinate variables and auxiliary coordinate variables. I am quite confident that anyone who was given that text could figure out which variables in a file were dimension or auxiliary coordinate variables, and know that certain forms were reserved and/or prohibited. A tutorial on "how to work with a thing" is not the same as a convention that defines a thing and the rules governing it.
