@martinjuckes It seems to me that there is a confusion in what you are saying between techniques for recognizing a dimension coordinate variable by inspection and the definition of a coordinate variable. Once the concept of dimension coordinate variable is defined, which includes intention and properties, then that information may be used to assess whether or not a particular variable is a dimension coordinate variable.
