@JonathanGregory I don't view the statement
> A one-dimensional auxiliary coordinate variable shall not have the same name
> as its dimension.
as a new requirement.

It is redundant to the statement in the previous paragraph
> A one-dimensional variable that is not a dimension coordinate variable shall
> not have the same name as its dimension.

I felt that it would good to make it clear that dimension coordinate variables
— and only dimension coordinate variables — may have the form "x(x)".

I'm fine with maintaining the recommendation if everyone else is.

The question of best location in the document is difficult. I think the
presence of [Section 1.2 -
Terminology[(http://cfconventions.org/cf-conventions/cf-conventions.html#terminology)
and the definitions located there require that some of the text be placed
there as parts of the definitions. This makes a coherent presentation of the
information difficult. As a result, I believe the whole text would go well
before paragraph 7 of [Section 1.3 -
Overview](http://cfconventions.org/cf-conventions/cf-conventions.html#_overview)
or in Section 1.2 as a preface to the vocabulary list.

A more structured but invasive approach would be to gather the various
paragraphs about coordinates into an early section devoted to the topic and
make the Terminology section an appendix. This would be a big lift, as it would
have knock-on effects that would likely require further restructuring for other
topic threads. In essence, the ideal approach would be to start by laying out
the data model, providing standards definitions and requirements as we went,
then move on to other topics such as cell methods, etc. Like I said. That's a
big lift.
