In my experience, most of the time I could install a MS upgrade without
having the original product installed. In some cases, I'd be prompted for
the original license key. In others, I might have to insert the original
product CD. In still others, I could simply install the "upgrade".

So, I guess we've both just been wasting Dylan's time - we're still no
closer to an answer.
